Shocked to see Gene Kelly as villain .... It doesn't suit him at all

Deanna Durbin shows incredible range as an actress in this role, one of only a very few real dramatic roles.

Have you seen "Lady On A Train?" It is noir/thriller too and she is wonderful in it!

I've heard of it. Very few actors and actresses have that range to be that good at two such diverse genres, in Durbin's case being terrific at both straight drama and musical comedy. Her range is definitely comparable to Ginger Rogers, who won an Oscar for a dramatic performance in Kitty Foyle, but gave some of her best and most memorable performances in comedies such The Major And The Minor and Bachelor Mother.

Those were not impressed on Deanna Durbin playing such a sad role at the time.
